Dr Nic Santarossa

Director | Registered Counsellor & Psychotherapist

M.Couns, MBBS, M.A.C.A Level 2

I am a masters-qualified counsellor and psychotherapist with a background in medicine. As previously a medical doctor, I am familiar with complex medical conditions and their associated medications and/or treatments. I am registered with the Australian Counselling Association which I am held to a high standard of ethical practice and undergo regular clinical supervision. I am a registered provider with the Australian Register of Counsellors and Psychotherapists and Doctors’ Health Queensland and a published author in several academic journals.

I aim to help you to increase your self-awareness by encouraging you to consider if any thoughts and behaviours may be obstacles in your way. By guiding you to examine your core values and beliefs, I can help you realise whether they are working for you or whether there has been a development due to a change in circumstances. I can assist you to rewrite your life story by offering alternate perspectives. I will encourage you to consider not just your current situation, but what your greater purpose in life is. If you want to change the self, you have to change the story. What are the stories you’re telling about yourself? I value authenticity and autonomy, and that is demonstrated through my work. My approach to counselling is strengths-based and person-centred as I recognise you as the expert in your own life.

My major interests include working with youth and adults who are struggling with:

Mood disorders - inclusive of Depression, Postnatal Depression and Bipolar Disorders

Anxiety disorders - inclusive of Generalised Anxiety and Social Anxiety

Eating and body image issues

Making sense of childhood trauma

Self-medicating behaviours

Chronic pain

Complex medical conditions

Please note — while offering generalised health, fitness and nutrition advice, I don’t provide a medical service.

I am completing a nationally-recognised specialist training course in Meaning-Centred Therapy (Logotherapy) and am a member of the Viktor Frankl Institue of Australia. The existentialist theory underpins the concept that we are all going to encounter unavoidable suffering throughout our lifetime. Logotherapists’ believe that meaning can be forged from even the darkest of circumstances. I aim to empower you to help you realise that although you may feel stuck, there are always options open to you, if only you know where to look.

Before completing my medical degree, I was a full-time ballet and contemporary dancer at the New Zealand School of Dance so naturally I love the arts and theatre. In my free time, I enjoy cooking and baking, tending to my plants, attending weekend markets and creating dried flower arrangements for my family and friends. I’m having a go at writing my first novel and I enjoy getaways in the rainforest with my husband.
